“Sleep is the best medicine”.
A phrase often heard when people are ill. This old folk wisdom was never fully understood. However, sleeping many hours is something we all do when we are not feeling well.
Because sleep has a healing effect.
Sleep Problems In Healthcare
Sleeping problems have always been associated with many different diseases and disorders. This ranges from psychological disorders like depression and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), to physiological diseases such as cancer. Over the past 20 years, more and more research is showing that sleep deprivation can also be a precursor for a wide range of health related problems, including diabetes, obesity and alzheimers.
Because sleep deprivation can play such a crucial role in developing or maintaining healthcare problems, we also use our Sleep Robots in the healthcare sector. Interest has come from many different areas, and the first results are very promising. Below are several use cases.
When people age, they often develop sleep problems. This can be due to a disturbance in day-night rhythm, the loss of a loved one, dementia or a change in living environment. Associated problems with sleep deprivation are a lack of energy and initiative during the day, higher risk of fall accidents and nightly activity, which needs much care from night workers. By giving patients comfort, relaxation and a feeling of safety, we help them and their caretakers in their day to day performance.
“For the employees, the Sleep Robot is a nice addition to the resources available to take care of our clients. Even if there is only one client who becomes calm from the Sleep Robot, this is already of enormous value.”
“It was a special experience for me to see how one of our residents, who was very unpleasant with the people around her, suddenly became calm from the Sleep Robot on her lap. It is nice that we get the chance to think along in the further development of the Sleep Robot for our target group.”
Up to 70% of people with an intellectual disability suffer from sleep deprivation and/or unrest during the day. By following the breathing rhythm of the Sleep Robot, patients can naturally relax during the day and fall asleep faster at night. This may reduce the number of alternative actions normally used for dealing with unrestful patients.
“I really fell asleep faster, within 5 seconds I drifted off. Also, I’m better able to process stimuli because of the sleep robot”
7 to 9 out of 10 patients suffering from PTSD have difficulty falling or staying sleeping. This is part of the problem. Due to their trauma, they have trouble sleeping enough hours per night. Moreover, due to high levels of the stress hormone norepinephrine in their brain, the sleep they get is not as it should be. Because of this, they do not get the restorative sleep that helps them heal their trauma. This vicious cycle is an extreme example of stress-related insomnia. The Somnox Sleep Robot can provide a feeling of safety and relaxation. Some of our customers suffering from PTSD have greatly improved their sleep. One of them explains his transformation in the video below.
